I hope the style of this book catches up, the way they did this translation. This is very much a follow-up story, and really introduced me to the last 'novel' I read, which first appeared in serials in a single newspaper: Sue's The Mysteries of Paris , with its episodic structure and sensational, highly exhilarating content. I know Dickens (and Dostoyevsky) are serialized too, but now reading as novels, they don't see the episodic stories like Sue did, and like this 1950s Hong Kong series. So I feel a certain caution about whether it would fit the covers as a novel in the series; and I wish they could have made a book as huge as Sue, 1300 pages in one go. In short, is this a novel? I hope so, but it's a strange thing. Readers need to be a little flexible about what they expect.
