To be honest, I am a little apprehensive about martial arts, where martial arts are added to the historical context. Hollywood action movies make me desperate - and books that try to be action movies are my nightmares. Even in my beloved TV Xena, an early imitator of Hong Kong martial arts films, I still indulge in the fight scenes or tea making. However, I still happily read each of these fight scenes even though they are only half the content of the book. I really can't explain that. Go to the original? And it's nice to have Qiu Chuji, who you may know as the old Taoist monk who met Chinggis Khan towards the end of his career, as an invincible fighting hero who has his share introduces the dark-cloaked Aragorn before we know he's not a bad guy.

Speaking of Chinggis, I enjoyed the Mongol parts, which told the main events in the Secret History of the Mongols, if briefly: Temujin's relationship with Ong Khan (Toghrul) and Jamuna. I love this authentic retelling of Mongolian tales, in the presentation of Temujin, and so on. I understand that Jin Yong incorporates a lot of content, like a fictional encyclopedia, most of which can be read by English-speaking readers including myself. . But I can vouch for having been authentically 'taught' the Secret History of the Mongols - with our young hero Guo Jing being cast as Tolui anda, present at events big, etc I like 'combined' books.
