Two men who are brothers of the arm befriend a Taoist. Taoists help choose names for their unborn children and discard them. These two men were betrayed and murdered. Their wives are arrested and their family line is in jeopardy. That's just the beginning of this generational story.
A Hero Born is a story of struggling from things beyond its control, at least in the United States. It's an old book that was first published in the 1950s. On top of that, it was translated into English, which certainly made it work. The writing just feels simple even though the background of a story is certainly present. The descriptions are missing, but that's a more important factor of the time period it was written than anything.

My biggest disappointment is probably that the book doesn't depict the war in a compelling way. I think the war may be the book that saves grace, but it is mostly forgettable.
A Hero Born is a story that transcends time and it's native language. Unfortunately, there's nothing really outstanding about it.
