After the Civil War, the Irish on both sides of the front lines joined in a plan to gain independence from Britain by capturing Canada. The soldiers' connection to Ireland was much stronger than the color of the uniforms they had fought in before. Circumstances allowed this plan of invasion to progress. Many believed that the potatoes were starving as a result of a conspiracy by the British, which further increased their determination. The Americans were supported by Britain because they supported the South during the Civil War. Americans also remember the British who came to Canada and burned Washington DC. The attack was not successful in liberating Ireland or crossing into Canada, but it did allow a new heroic event to take place and spawn the Irish Independence movement. Klein writes a fluent and well-documented history of the events leading up to the invasion, the invasion, and its aftermath. Klein's writing style and obscurity of events are almost like alternate history. It was an almost perfect storm of events and circumstances that created this chapter in history.
