Bernardo O'Higgins led the Chilean independence effort. John Riley and St. Patrick's Brigade fought Mexican troops in the Mexican-American War while other Irishmen had previously fought to defend the Alamo. Irish people have a history of fighting for the causes they believe in. One cause has always been freedom from British rule.
