The author, Shin, was born in a camp because of supposed anti-communist (anti-Kim) sentiments of his grandparents, where he would likely spend his entire life - it takes beating the dissident genes out of the next three generations to be rid of it. From his mother competing with him for limited food; to outing his mother and brother for planning an escape (leading to their execution, as he figured it would); to an existence of hunger, cold, hard work, beatings; to not even know a country named China even existed - these and more constituted life for people in the camps. A pox on humanity. The leaders of North Korea are criminals against humanity. The analogy that comes to my mind is that what's happening in North Korea is Cambodia under Pol Pot, except perhaps in slower motion; though the death camps in Nazi Germany, the Gulags in Stalin's Russia, and parts of the Cultural Revolution in China are also apt.
