Every time I plan a trip, I make a point of reading as many books as possible about my destination. What better way is there to truly appreciate a vacation than to learn about the local people and their culture through the written word of experts? These experts spend decades and some times their whole lives acquiring this knowledge. Needless to say, a vacationer could never hope to attain a fraction of that knowledge during the week-long drunken stupor of an average vacation. The problem is, I often plan vacations months or even a year in advance. So I do my best to put off my reading until a couple of months before my actual trip. After all, I want the material to be fresh in my memory in order to really appreciate the experience. Naturally, this leads to serious procrastination and often results in me reading zero books before a trip.
