Jang’s story is interesting. His descriptions of his visit back to his home town during the great famine of the 1990s were especially terrible. As a revered government worker in Pyongyang, Jang received extra rations and didn’t realize the extent of the average person’s plight during this time. When he returned home for a short vacation, Jang describes a meeting with friends where he noticed a few people are missing. When he asked where they were, he was informed that they died of starvation.
