difficult to read. the story of Shin, born and raised in a North Korean work camp. we hear about his childhood, where he was given only the most rudimentary education, in preparation for a lifetime of hard labor and an early death. family means nothing. life is relentlessly brutal. everyone is always starving. the guards at the prison camp have essentially free reign to beat and kill prisoners. the prisoners accept this, especially the children, because they are inculcated with the belief that everything they experience is a punishment for the sin of their simple existence. Shin's father, we learn, was guilty of having brothers who fled the country. Shin's father and mother were introduced as a reward for good behavior in the camp; interactions between men and women are rigid, and the punishment for any relationship that's not sanctioned by the government is death (even if the woman is pregnant because the guards raped her). Blaine Harden remains open with the reader throughout the book; Shin's story about his mother and brother's executions changed drastically, and there's no way to verify much of what he says. experts, however, confirm that everything he says agrees with what information they have. Shin's scars are a testament to his horrific stories of torture and his bloody, tragic escape.
