Reading Dear Leader is akin to reading one of the many famous dystopian novels through the 20th century; your 1984s and Brave New Worlds but of course set in the very real, very present, late 20th and early 21th century. Jang Jin-Sung combines his personal memoir from birth up to the point of becoming a South Korean resident with a critical account of North Korean society and politics on a more general scale. The author of this book worked among some of the highest appointed ‘cadres’ in North Korea, personally familiar with Kim Jong-Il as he worked with the few chosen ones who served as part of the North Korean leader’s ‘private’ personnel; ‘the admitted’ is the term used by the author speaking of this group of people he worked with before his escape from North Korea.
