Being born in the camp is significant for a number of reasons. One is that he was surprisingly not indoctrinated in all of the propaganda about the “dear leader” that I learned about in NOTHING TO ENVY. He didn’t have to relearn North Korean history when he escaped because he never learned it in the first place. Camp 14 allowed some of their prisoners to have children, which was the case with Shin. His parents didn’t even know each other and only spent a few nights together a year. It was not a traditional family. His father and older brother were in a men’s barrack and did different work than his mother. His parents’ marrying was more like a reward for good behavior and seemed more like breeding animals than anything. The biggest significance to me was that Shin was raised like an animal. It was all about survival. No one could be trusted. The people in the camp were rewarded for being an informant. Later in the story when he doesn’t inform on someone it is only because it is in Shin’s self-interest to be quiet. He had no concept of loyalty. He really had no human emotions. How could you when you were starved, beaten and watched countless people die, including children in your school for small discretions. He even helped in the beatings.
