Since Jang’s main job was as a propagandist that emulated South Korean writing, he had access to all the foreign books and news sources that were banned in North Korea. North Korea has one hundred copies of such books, each labeled with the numbers 1-100 to help keep track of them. Other than a few privileged individuals, these books were not meant to leave the propaganda office. As Jang was exposed to more foreign ideas, he felt less and less loyalty toward the regime. Jang eventually began loaning out banned books to a friend with similar disdain for the government, something that was strictly forbidden. This went on for a while until his friend misplaced a bag with a banned book in it, and the book was traced back to Jang. Facing certain death if convicted (the only reason there was any due process in his case is due to his rank in the UDF) Jang and his friend decided to escape across the border, into China together.
